Through our proprietary Wet Chemistry extraction process, we ACTIVATE the humate molecules (Humic Acid), making them a functional carbon.

What are Humic Acids?

All soils and bodies of water contain humic compounds, which are byproducts of the decomposition of organic material such as trees, shrubs and plants. Leonardite has a significant amount of humic acids compared to other organic compounds. Leonardite is the result of a humification process that took 70 million years to complete, whereas peat took only a few thousand years to produce.

Humic and Fulvic acids, are the biological core and major component of natural humic matter. They are intricate molecules that naturally occur in soil, bogs, seas, and freshwater. Humic & Fulvic acids are a fantastic all-natural and organic approach to provide soil and plants bioavailable nutrients.

By extraction, they are separated into humin, humic acid, and fulvic acid. Humic acid, which is the major component, creates the biological core of the humus. Humic acid can be found in a layer of soft brown coal that has not yet transitioned into lignite at concentrations of up to 85-90%. Internationally, this stratum of soft oxidized subbituminous coal is known as leonardite. Its high level of oxidation and high concentration of carboxyl groups in humic acids are what make it so functional.

Humus is made up of short-chained chemical compounds of various types, such as polysaccharides, polypeptides, aliphatic groups (fats), and lignin fragments. These compounds form aggregates with cations and clay particles creating micropores in the soil where roots, water, oxygen, nutrients, and microbes can reside.

What is HUMIN and what are the differences between Humic, Humin and Fulvic acid?

While Humic Substances (Humates) consist of Humic, Fulvic, and Humin (H-U-M-I-N). Humic Acids have a CEC of 280-300 while Fulvic Acids can be over 500, making them excellent for chelating and complexing plant nutrients. Therefore, Humin fraction differs. It has a high cation exchange capacity like humic and a 250-275 Anion Exchange Capacity. Whereas fulvic acids have anion exchange capacity, but humic does not. Both Humic and Fulvic have high CECs, but Humin has more anion exchange capacity.

how does it work?

Humin molecules have both positively charged and negatively charged sites. This means that they can bond with and hold Anions like phosphorus, nitrates, and sulfur as well as negatively charged Cations (calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium).


Important note:

Lastly, it’s important to know that once the plant nutrients have joined with the humate molecules, they are no longer soluble in the soil solution. This keeps them from getting into the air and washing out of the soil. The plant-available nutrient is physically held in the soil by the humate molecules, so the roots of the plant can take it up as needed. For example, if liquid nitrogen 34-0-0 is applied along with extracted Humin molecules, it will effectively stabilize the nitrogen in the soil for up to 60–90 days. This keeps the nitrogen from leaching out of the soil into waterways or escaping into the air, which greatly improves the efficiency with which nutrients are used.
